Precision Light Manipulation Optical Applications

Andover Prisms & Beamsplitters

Precise light manipulation for advanced optical systems

Prisms and beamsplitters are fundamental optical components used to direct, split, and combine light with exceptional precision. Beamsplitters divide incident light at designated ratios into separate beams or can be used in reverse to combine different beams into a single one. These versatile components come in two main configurations:

Each component is characterized by key optical properties:

  • Reflection/Transmission (R/T) Ratio: The specific split between reflected and transmitted light
  • Polarization Response: How the component handles different polarization states
  • Wavelength Range: The spectral region over which the component operates effectively

Andover Corporation offers multiple types of beamsplitters and prisms to suit different applications:

  • Standard Beamsplitters: For use with unpolarized light sources
  • Polarizing Beamsplitters: For separating light into distinct polarization states
  • Non-polarizing Beamsplitters: For maintaining original polarization states
  • Dichroic Beamsplitters: For wavelength-specific splitting

Using advanced coating technologies and precision materials, we can create custom solutions optimized for your specific wavelength, angle of incidence, and polarization requirements. Our in-house fabrication and coating capabilities ensure the highest quality and performance for your optical system.

Prism & Beamsplitter Construction Options

Andover Corporation offers multiple construction configurations for prisms and beamsplitters, each engineered for specific performance characteristics. Understanding these options helps ensure optimal selection for your application:

Cube Beamsplitters

Constructed using two right-angle prisms with the hypotenuse surface of one prism coated and the pair cemented together to form a cube. This design offers key advantages:

  • Easy integration with 0° angle of incidence
  • No beam shift
  • Equal reflected and transmitted optical path lengths
  • Ability to shorten the optical path of a system

Plate Beamsplitters

Consists of a thin, flat glass plate with precision coatings on the first surface and anti-reflection coating on the second surface to eliminate unwanted Fresnel reflections. Benefits include:

  • Lightweight construction
  • Cost-effective for larger sizes
  • Custom size flexibility
  • Tunable performance based on angle of incidence
